I'm a guy who has a really bad cgpa, less than 6/10, because of many mistakes and circumstances. I really have no idea abt my prospects after writing the GRE. Even if I work hard enough and get a score of 1450 plus, im not so sure I would be admitted anywhere in the US. If anyone can encourage me that this is not the case, somebody who has an idea, i would be much obliged.

One good thing in all this is I'm quite proficient in analytical questions, english, math ... I'm confident of getting a really good GRE score if i work hard enough... just that I'm unable to find the incentive because I keep thinking I've screwed up my engineering, beyond the point of no return..

Also, what if your GPA is not so up to par (like really low). However, reccomendations and experience is very good and relevant. Is that enough to balance it out if you do well on the GRE. Or should we opt to take subject GREs to help allevite the GPA part? I have heard two opinions. One saying yes you should and take the subject GREs in subjects you did bad in, and then those saying no, it would be over kill and you should concentrate on your experience and what not. I am a bioinformatics major btw. Any suggestions?

Thank you, but one question.. is it mandatory to count your score, or can you decide not to send them to you univ. you want to apply to and re-take them. Some say yes, and some say no.

Hey Ravin, that gives you a 2.74/4 GPA!

First off, do you have a GPA system in NIT? Or did you calculate it? Second of all, there is a system of rating courses and getting GPAs depending on the course difficulty.

So, there is a weightage for difficulty. You'd have to compare the course difficulty of your own along with the suggested difficulties of the courses in the college you are interested and recalculate the GPA. Generally, Indian colleges can put the highest difficulty weightage. So why don't ya try doing that and get back to me.

Furthermore, also make sure you put your rank in the college. That holds a great weightage. Esp if you are in the top 1% etc, it would be really useful for your applications :-)!

This resource is great.thanks.I have a query -
I have done Btech CSE from NIT jalandhar with 6.85/10 gpa.
Many of the better colleges in US say a min cutoff of 3/4 gpa.
Is there any way of getting there

Contained in your excellent piece was the following: "the test will try to hone in on your score from the broad spectrum [200-800] for a particular section," and since the subject is education, you might appreciate a correction. The correct term should be to "home in on." Just think of a homing pigeon. An example of the proper usage according to the dictionary is "To move or lead toward a goal: The investigators were homing in on the truth." Hone means to sharpen and is not related. I used the improper term for many, many years until I recently happened to see used correctly in a NYT article and thought you might appreciate knowing it.

I did something interesting. Seeing the amount of hits for this particular post. I did a tag search on GRE over at <a href="http://del.icio.us" title="del.icio.us" rel="nofollow">del.icio.us</a>! I would recommend this as an excellent way to get more resources for your GRE. I should have done this earlier. :-D!

Here's the link that you need to follow for the same <a href="http://del.icio.us/tag/gre/" title="del.icio.us GRE tag search results" rel="nofollow">del.icio.us/tag/gre results</a>.

There are some really good sites out here :-)!

I came across an interesting site @ Blog Spot. Although it says Master GRE, please be warned that not all material presented are for the GRE. There are some good resources here though.

<a href="http://info-gre.blogspot.com/" title="Master GRE" rel="nofollow">Master GRE</a>

[Note to self: Sort through the material and present the resources for GRE]
