Post from an iphone

Checking out the iPhone really early in the morning! While I think it could really benefit with a keyboard, it’s trying it’s best to adjust to my dual finger typing! In fact, i think I can almost get used to it!

An iPhone in India for INR 8000 ($199) – I don’t think so

According to this article here, Vodafone is making available a contract free iPhone in Italy for 499 Euros! That’s about INR 32550.00

So if Italy gets a contract free iPhone for INR 32550.00, how much do you think we have to shell out in India?

So much for an Apple iPhone a day, keeps my sadness at bay!! =(!

iChat for Windows – Will you use it if it comes through?

There are rumors around the web (which practically everyone calls a fake) that Apple will release an iPhone that supports the same video chat enabled via iChat on Monday. To propagate this usage, they are planning to release an iChat version for Windows as well.

The question is this – Will you use iChat for Windows?

Going by the track record of applications of Apple released for Windows, they are an option (at best) and sucky (at worst). Look iTunes / Safari. iTunes is so crippling in Windows that even I hate to use it in Windows. Safari just takes Apple’s arrogance to a whole new level in Windows. They even brought in their font rendering system to Windows. While it’s beautiful in Mac OS X, Apple defied its own laws of homogeneity by ditching ClearType in Windows.

I like iChat. However, I prefer Adium to iChat even in OSX. How many people would really adopt iChat for Windows? Let me know ur thoughts in the comments…

A Reinstall Later…

Of late, OS X just didn’t work on my MacBook. The keyboard used to stop responding and only the applications currently running used to respond. No Application used to launch. I tried going through many forums, but in vain. The problem was unique and from my Windows experience, I did what I think would work best – REINSTALL.
Well, I was dreading the fact that I would have to reinstall everything from scratch and well even more worried that some of the applications, which came bundled would be a pain to port to Leopard, considering that I got a Tiger DVD with the laptop.
However, much to my surprise, the whole process was a breeze. I reinstalled Leopard from scratch on the MacBook. OS X itself took about 20 minutes to install. Another 10-15 minutes for the bundled package of iLife and iWork and Office from the original set of DVDs. Pack it up with software updates that I had already downloaded off the net (else it’s going to take a humongous amount of time, considering the speeds of broad band in India).
The process started yesterday evening and with Time Machine backups (yeah I regularly backed up my Mac), the transition is done and I am back to working and with 100% efficiency. No late night sleep loss, no need to sit and install every single driver for every single component in the computer and most importantly, I am not back to the same problem that I wanted to get rid off.
There are somethings that Mac OS X does right, but at the same time, like the problem I faced earlier, when things take a bad turn, they are going down the wrong wrong wrong lane!!

Apple: “…and one day we will enter India,…”

http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/080304/apple_asia.html?.v=1

Apple COO Tim Cook was quoted by Reuters at Apple’s annual shareholder meeting

We will enter Asia with the iPhone in 2008… we will one day enter China, we’re not saying when, and we will one day enter India

When _is_ that day? We are already nearing one year since the release of iPhone and there is not even a whisper in India. When you contact the local retailers of Apple hardware, all you get is 8-10 months more. *Sigh*. You disappoint me Mr Jobs.

India gets everything late, new line of laptops enter as late as 3-4 months (that’s a quarter :-P ) and iPods a couple of months. Why this ill treatment? Aren’t there enough Mac faithful in any other country? I am trying to dig up some numbers for the number of Mac users in the country. Well, when we join together, with the typical clamor that Indians are known for, we will be a force to reckon with ;-D!

Anyhoo, here goes the open request for any Mac faithful / Apple faithful in India. If you own/rent/lease Apple hardware, put in a comment. We can decide how we can get the iPhone in India.

MacBook Air!

And while the skeptics wondered, if Apple would indeed name one product in their notebook lines – Air, Apple has decided to call their latest “thinnovation” – MacBook Air. Check it out!! Yet another gadget to drool over!Like an uber geek, I followed Stevenote till the end ;-) ! And well, sadly there was no “one more thing” this year.. And what happened to the Leopard update? I just see an iTunes update (supporting movie rentals now and a related iMovie and Front Row update) *sigh*!When’s my cat getting its bath?

Paul Anka – Smells like Teen Spirit

That’s so wrong at so many levels, I don’t have any words to explain it! Kurt, brother – don’t toss, don’t turn in your grave that is!!

Apple after-sales Service: Still a myth in India

I bought an Apple MacBook in the first week of November. Yes, I had timed it so that it’s after Leopard is launched. I had timed it so that I could get the new X3100 on the laptop. However, Apple India (and according to Apple India, so does Apple Asia) magically lacks behind its <insert country here> counterparts.

India (and Asia) had not updated to the latest revisions (despite showcasing it in their website). The machines didn’t come with Leopard. I had inquired regarding the same, and I was promised @ the Apple store that I will receive my Leopard update DVD immediately after the 15th of November.

It’s been a month since and I still have not received my Leopard update DVD! Frustrated of talking to the store, I contacted Apple directly to be notified that the Leopard update division in India work only from 11am to 2pm and that I should contact them tomorrow.

I dunno what’s going on, but I am not too happy being in the Apple family all of a sudden!! =(!

Question to Mac and Apple – Is the Windows bashing necessary?

OSX vs Windows Vista

Disclaimer: I haver never owned a Mac or used / worked in OSX, however respect both the machine and the OS.

Year – 1998: As a junior editor for the yearbook, I was introduced to a PC, well a computer at least that had a mouse which had only one mouse button! This was the year I had actually been given a computer @ home and I was hooked to Windows 95 and Motoracer and a game called G-Nome! I used to scoff @ the links leading me to the desktop from where I am typing this particular post when I used to search for cheat codes for the game – GNome! The Intenet Explorer was a true boon to me – a source of games, cheat codes, chatting and PORN! ;-) ! Windows was GOD, as it allowed me to do all that – play games and check out porn!

I had an AMD K6 processor based machine, which clocked 200Mhz and well it was AWESOME ;-) ! I never realised at that point of time, the magnitude of change, literally a radical revolution that was going to occur with the electronics industry and 8 years later, I’d be typing away on a laptop that’s easily 20 times more powerful than my desktop in 1998, will run a version of the Operating Sytem, which was named after a game I knew and I’d be using that same OS to type something known as a blog, about what I thought about [or didn't] 8 years ago over a hi-speed internet connection.

Anyhoo, the point is that the world has changed. Now, getting back to the main topic. At that point of time, I NEVER imagined that I’d be drooling over a laptop created by those same SINGLE-MOUSE-COMPUTER guys and Id be lusting behind a version of the Operating System, which I thought was complete crap. I am smitten people, yes, truly crazy about the MacBook and the MacBook Pro. These notebooks are an exquisite mesh of sound engineering design, power and eye-candy! Something Apple has been excelling at – a good-looking gadget that according to them “JUST WORKS”

Consequently, my free time, this is the time other than the time I don’t work and I am not writing to my better half, I have been checking out videos and pictures of the MacBook and MacBook Pro. Well, all-in-all, I have just one statement tomake – I WANNA GET MYSELF ONE OF THOSE!! Well, at least that was the case until today afternoon, where I came across a very interesting video.

What I found appalling about this video was the constant mockery of Windows Vista by the Apple people. I agree that OSX is an amazing Operating System – a software wonder. Be kind enough to share it with the PC world! If you think people all over the world would appreciate it so much, why is Mac not release OSX – PC Version? Well, the answer is simple – it can’t!!

OSX will run offcially ONLY on a Mac. Talk about proprietary to the core. This is something along the lines of how Sony works as well. Sony has its own brand of adapters, chargers, even alkaline cell policies, which allow ONLY Sony Battery chargers to run on it!

Now, whilst I agree that this is important to maintain Mac sales, and also is the reason why the Mac running OSX is a lot more stable than the PC running Windows, Apple guys were twisting the fact, trying to make us consumers believe that OSX is a lot better than Windows, Windows Vista in this case. That too based on the “similarity” of “looks” of certain applications.

However, Apple _conveniently_ forgot to mention the following – Windows is targeted at a mainstream customer base, where in the hardware is NOT an issue. A Windows copy [mite not be all the features all the time] will definitely run on any PC, as long as it maintains the requirements of the Operating System!! Now, I agree that Microsoft might have spent an awful lot of money and resources on developing Windows Vista. However, what I am considering what Microsoft has done, if at all they have copied features of Mac, is bring the features of OSX into the PC world, which is going to be received with open arms. I am still shocked @ the negative publicity given to an operating system, which wasn’t even released at the point of time the video was shot.

I had great respect for Steve Jobs, however his stupid bullish attitude is now making me take a fresh look at his products. There’s NO reason for him to take such a bullish attitude with Microsoft and Windows. This is also shown in the Mac vs PC ads. So, Steve, seriously, your products look great and I have heard that they work amazingly well as well, however what you did in that show, was rude, and totally uncalled for. I have not seen, so far at least any ads by Microsoft against any of your products, and trust me, your products are NOT flawless.

The Mac is picking up sales thanks to the shift to the Intel Chips. However, you must also take note Steve, the multitude of videos in youtube, the tremendous number of pics in Flickr, etc, which show a Mac running WIndows. Apple itself is working on BootCamp so that it “does” windows now.

But, Steve ever considered this – A Mac now runs Windows, but can any PC run OSX?

Windows - Mac - VodkaSo, chill guys, I mean there’s market for everyone!! Peace in the cyber world!! I am all up for innuendos, but downright flagrant attack on your competitor’s products is NOT good marketing =D! It’s a good way to get attention to yourself, however, make sure that you have a product that can handle all that attention!!

Update: 2006-12-09 Check out this video during MacWorld 1997. Hmm, interesting how Steve Jobs has changed his perception after Apple has pulled itself back together.

I was apprehensive about what I wrote wondering I were indeed a bit strong about Apple, not being a sportive player in the market. However, after seeing the video above, where in Apple was down and under and Microsoft and Apple “tying the knot” literally, really speaks something about Steve Jobs doesn’t it?
